Ants on apples rhyme - Letter ‘h’ Sample!

What’s included? This download includes one simple, predictable alphabet rhyme for the letter ‘h’ - in colour AND black and white (so x2 sheets in total). This rhyme has been set out landscape orientation - the complete ‘alphabet set’ is available in my TES shop! What’s it for? This rhyme is part of an alphabet set (of the same layout) and has been designed for learners to practise reading simple words (images make noun-words clear) and each rhyme practises one phonic sound - this rhyme focuses on ‘h’. How to use it? Using a pointer (or pointy finger!) learners point to each word/sound as they say/sing it out loud, some rhymes are more ‘silly’ than others(!) In this rhyme the horses wear the hats! This is a unique, fun and engaging way to practise reading and phonics that all learners will enjoy. These rhymes also provide a great opportunity to practise using one to one correspondence - an important early reading skill. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support, revisiting any/all of these sounds and practising reading using one to one correspondence. Resource Details The layout of every letter/sound rhyme is in the same format, making this a predictable and structured activity, ideal to keep learners engaged and independent. The font used is ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 50, so a good, ‘easy to read’ size. This rhyme is - Hats on horses h, h, h. Hats on horses h, h, h. Hats on horses h, h, h. Hats on horses! Suggestions Learners might like to practise reading these on their own, in pairs or small groups or even as a class during a whole carpet session, reading/singing along together. I recommend printing out the colour versions of these (the colours look so lovely!) and laminating each rhyme to help keep them in good condition. You may wish to introduce these rhymes alongside learning these sounds for the first time and have a set (e.g. of x6) of every rhyme printed out and laminated for groups to use as an extension/quiet activity. Or, these rhymes may be good to introduce later to recap on some sounds which may be proving to be more tricky to remember. My classes of early years and year one children were really motivated to use these and very good at practising them quietly to themselves using ‘whispery voices’ (so cute!) I found that all learners really enjoyed using these with a ‘pointer’ which I had a pot of (pointers!) stored with the rhymes, ready to use. What’s included? x1 sheet, landscape orientation, pdf format. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for learners in the Early Years and Years 1 and 2 who have learnt Phase 2, 3 and 5 sounds. This resource is also ideal for older pupils who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. What’s it for? This colour-word writing resource enables learners to use their phonic knowledge (from phonics phases 2, 3 and 5) to write each of the x8 colour-words included. This activity is ideal for individuals to be getting on with independently and has been designed to promote autonomy - clear answers are included yet are to be folded out of sight for learners to then check themselves after having a try. This could also be used by learners to revisit/practise writing these sounds with an adult. How to use it? Each colour (balloon) has the correct number of lines underneath for learners to sound out each colour word and write the graphemes (on these lines). Where more than one letter forms the grapheme the line provided is wider/longer, guiding learners on whether the phoneme is one letter or two. Resource Details… The colour of each tick (above each balloon) indicates which phonics phase the sounds for that word are from making this ideal to target specific phonics areas and encouraging learners to practise their knowledge in this (colour word) context. What’s included? x1 sheet, landscape orientation, pdf format. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for learners in the Early Years, pupils in Year 1 and 2 who are learning how to order words alphabetically. This resource is also ideal for older learners needing to revisit/practise the concept of alphabetical order. What’s it for? Using their alphabet knowledge learners cut out and order each colour word (balloon) included. This activity is ideal for individuals to be getting on with independently and has been designed to promote autonomy - clear answers are included yet are to be folded out of sight for learners to then check themselves after having a try. For learners needing more support this activity could completed with an adult. How to use it? Each colour word is clearly included under each coloured balloon at the top of the sheet. These are to be cut out (following the dotted lines) and the balloons ordered alphabetically on the grid-row included. For those learners needing additional support the colour words can be cross referenced with the alphabet included (at the top of the sheet) to help learners order these alphabetically. For more able learners/those needing a more of a challenge this supporting alphabet-reference can be folded back (out of sight) for learners to instead use their memory/recall their knowledge of the alphabet - to be used as appropriate depending on the needs of each learner. Resource Details… Learners will each need a pencil to write their name and record the number date (top, right). They will also need access to a pair of scissors and a glue stick. This Opposites ‘Spot the difference’ activity includes x2 landscape, pdf sheets - the activity (page 1) and answers (page 2). What’s it for? This activity has been designed to encouraged learners to think more about opposites, what these mean and identify where they are shown in the images. Learners also identify the word labels for these and match them with a simple line - using a short ruler may help with accuracy. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for pupils in the early years, years one and two as well as older students needing additional support with learning. Resource Details Page 1 This resource explores the concept of ‘opposites’ through two pictures showing the same scene with x9 differences (between the pictures) to identify. These differences are all ‘opposites’. Learners draw a circle around the part of the scene where they identify an opposite, they could used a different colour for each pair of opposites. Once learners identify a difference between the picture scenes they find the matching labels below. Learners link the two opposite (word) labels using a straight line connecting these words. Page 2 The layout of this page is exactly the same layout at page 1 with the opposite differences identified in both picture scenes with a circle around the image and lines connecting the word label to make these clear. The opposites included are - on/off, up/down, sit/stand, sunny/rainy, shut/open, dry/wet, above/below, alive/not alive and in front/behind. What’s included? This download includes two pages (x2 A4 sheets, portrait orientation) featuring one ‘people words’ word search (page 1). The answers (on page 2) clearly show where all words are hidden, displayed in the same layout (as page 1) for easy comparison and quick reference. Who’s it for? This wordsearch has been designed for pupils in years one and two and maybe the early years, as well as students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This resource has been designed to encourage and support young learners with reading key high frequency words. Resource layout The wordsearch letters are arranged in a x10 by x10 square grid and featuring easy to read size 25 ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ font. The people words have been organised into four groups of four (one group of five), clearly showing all hidden words below the wordsearch. As said, there are x17 words to find in total. These words are hidden horizontally (forwards and backwards), vertically (up as well as down) and diagonally (forwards). Words to find are; mummy, mother, daddy, father, man, boy, brother, girl, sister, parent, baby, grandma, grandad, people, children, friend and woman. Recommendations I recommend that learners use a ‘highlighter’ style pen when finding the hidden words as highlighters enable all letters to remain visible once each word has been identified. Some letters have been used more than once (for different words) so all letters need to remain visible (if words are instead ‘crossed out’ this makes the letters harder to read and identify). This pdf download includes x4 landscape orientation sheets featuring every letter (and full word labels) to make the two words ‘Hello’ and ‘Welcome’ with clear step by step instructions to create colourful acetate letters/words for (window) display. What’s it for? These letters have been designed to evoke a sense of awe and wonder - the letters look lovely when the sun shines through them and where the colours for each word ‘falls’ depends on the position of the colours in relation to the sun which changes as the sun’s position changes. These letters/words are ideal for displaying on a glass panel on a classroom door, offering a different and interesting ‘welcome’ to visitors to your classroom/learning space and obviously encourage learners to recognise and read these words. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two though would suit any window where those who see the letters/words would appreciate a pop of colour shining through letters/words when the sun comes out! Resource Details There are x4 pages. The first page includes clear step-by-step instructions and the remaining pages includes the separate letters to make the words ‘Welcome’ and ‘Hello’ (with exclamation marks!) The last page (4) includes the two words as one-word labels. Suggestions Printing and making these letters out of white card is recommended - paper is too flimsy and see-through so not effective. A set of coloured acetate/cellophane sheets is needed to make these - these are pretty inexpensive online. We also recommend also backing every letter/each word in white card so that the coloured acetate/cellophane is concealed - this looks so much sharper on the window and makes each letter stronger however is twice the work and time. Resource details The font used is Sassoon Infant Std - size 100. This activity has been designed to write straight on. Each letter has a clear ‘starting dot’ so learners know where to place their pencil to begin and dotted lines on top of letters provide guidance of where exactly to write. This resource focuses on the letter b for the first x4 lines then letter d for the next x4 lines. The last line focuses on both letters - b then d. Each line has been designed to become slightly more challenging in terms of the visual support provided. There is a clear space for learners to write their name on the line at the base of the sheet. There is also a clear space to record the number date at the top, right of the sheet, helpful to keep completed sheets and track progress (and improvement!) over time. All letters are positioned on a line - to model how letters should look when positioned correctly on a line. Lines 1 and 5 These letters are shaded a with pale grey and have an outline to help guide learners writing inside the line. The first b/d on line 1/5 begins with a clear colour-coded letter showing exactly where to begin - on the green ‘go dot’ (step 1) . Learners follow the colour coded numbered dots to the final red ‘stop dot’. Lines 2 and 6 These letters are the same as on lines 1/5, however the letters do not have the ‘outline’ guiding learners to keep ‘inside’ of the lines. Lines 3 and 7 These letters do not have an outline or grey base colour, only a starting dot and grey dotted lines. Lines 4 and 8 These letters have a grey base colour and a starting dot but do not include guiding dotted lines. Learners will need to remember the directions to form these letters by themselves. Line 9 This is a repeat of the style of the letters as previously introduced (as arranged vertically) to encourage learners to become more independent as the move right along the line when in writing these letters. This resource has been designed to encourage and support young learners with reading ‘high frequency’ key words. There are x24 words to find - a lot ! Resource layout The wordsearch letters are arranged in a x10 by x10 square grid and featuring easy to read size 25 ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ font. The question words have been organised into four groups of six, clearly showing all hidden words below the wordsearch. As said, there are x24 words to find in total. These words are hidden horizontally (forwards and backwards), vertically (up as well as down) and diagonally (forwards and backwards). Words to find are; can, are, could, should, would, why, do, don’t, did, is, will, must, have, how, who, has, was, may, what, when, were, where, which and whose. Recommendations I recommend that learners use a ‘highlighter’ style pen when finding the hidden words as highlighters enable all letters to remain visible once each word has been identified. Some letters have been used more than once (for different words) so all letters need to remain visible (if words are instead ‘crossed out’ this makes the letters harder to read and identify). This resource has been designed to practise reading and writing x8 simple sentences to identify and make corrections to each one. Every sentence has x3 errors to correct. Two answer pages are included in the same format, making every error made clear. Answers could be used by learners to cross-check their sentences, promoting autonomy. Who’s it for? This resource is aimed at learners who are learning Phase 5 phonics, this may be learners in Reception, years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details Pages 1 and 2 both include x4 sentences, each in a separate box and illustrated with a simple image on the right. Both pages include the same instructions at the top - making it clear to learners that there are x3 errors in each sentence and what these errors may be. This pdf download includes x3 landscape orientation sheets featuring x7 colour ‘splats’ with colour name labels with clear step by step instructions to create colourful acetate/cellophane colours for (window) display. What’s it for? These colours have been designed to install and sense of awe and wonder - the coloured shapes look beautiful when the sun shines through them and where the colour ‘falls’ depends on the position of the colours in relation to the sun which changes as the sun’s position changes. The set gives an opportunity to showcase the whole set of colours together as a focus to encourage learners to recognise and name each colour. The colours can of course be repositioned and displayed as you choose. A ‘Colours!’ label (to be displayed with the set of shapes) is included. This resource would also support work on shadows and light/dark. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students who would appreciate a pop of colour shining through when the sun comes out! Resource Details There are x3 pages. The first page includes clear instructions with two colours, the second page includes remaining colours in the set and the last page the ‘Colours!’ word label. The colours featured in this resource are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink and purple. Suggestions We recommend printing and making these letters out of white card - paper would be too flimsy and see-through so not effective. A set of coloured acetate/cellophane sheets is needed to make these - these are quite inexpensive online. We also recommend also backing every colour in white card so that the coloured acetate/cellophane is concealed - this looks so much nicer on the window and makes each letter stronger however is twice the work and time and to do this x6 sheets of A4 white card will be needed (instead of x3 sheets). This phonics activity enables learners to sound out graphemes to read simple simple words (all contain the ‘u’ sound) to match with the corresponding picture. This set has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for groups/individuals to be getting on with independently. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. How to use it? An adult needs to print and pre-cut the cards into rectangles (dotted lines guide where to cut). The set of cards can be placed on a carpet/table top. Learners read each word by sounding out the individual graphemes featured, they then match each word to the picture from this set. Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they sound out the words. Resource Details… The words/pictures included use phonemes/graphemes from Phase 2 only. Blue (Set u) words included - bun (may be confused with ‘cake’ or ‘cupcake’ though in Yorkshire (for example) this is a ‘bun’!) duck/cup/truck/slug/sun/bug/plug/hut/mug Sets a/e/i/o are also available. Each set is a different colour to avoid cards becoming mixed and to help finding a relevant matching card easier. Suggestion Print this resource onto card (and laminate) to improve durability. Card sets (alone or more than one together) can be used to play games e.g. ‘pairs’.
